According to Madam Noire’s Brandy Victorian-Teenagers are engaging in increasingly risky sexual behavior, studies are finding. A recent article in the Journal of Urban Health: Bulletin of the New York Academy of Medicine showed that 1 in 13 girls, aged 14 to 20, has had a group-sex experience—and not necessarily by choice. More than half of the 328 girls who had used a Boston-area community or school-based health clinic, said they felt pressured to engage in group sex.
The average age of the first group-sex experience was 15.6 years old and more than half of the teens (54%) said they were younger than 16 when they first experimented with group sex. The majority said the activity was a one-time thing, while 21% have had multiple group-sex experiences. One-third reported using alcohol or drugs prior to their most recent experience, with half of those girls saying use was involuntary. Forty-five percent also indicated that a male participant did not use a condom during their most recent group-sex encounter—calling attention to the increased reproductive and sexual health issues these girls are at risk for.
While the researchers found that young women who engaged in group sex were more likely to have been exposed to pornography and childhood sexual abuse than their peers, they say they need to learn just as much about the type of men who coerce women to participate in multi-person sex (MPS), which ranges from gang rape to sex parties.
“Given the substantial proportion of girls who reported that their MPS was nonconsensual, additional research to understand more about the perpetrators, and how to prevent this particular form of sexual violence, is warranted,” the authors said.
Are you surprised by the high rate of group sex among young girls? Do you think gang rape situations are more common or are young girls succumbing to pressures from males and media to be more sexual at younger ages?
