Mothers of 2 Detroit women found in trunk plead for public's help solving case

The mothers of two out of the four women found dead in a trunk over the holidays are begging with the public to help find what police say might be a killer targeting escorts.

The mothers of two of the victims were dumbfounded by the death of their daughters, claiming their daughters were never caught up in the escort world, and that they were “good kids” who were targeted in a senseless crime.

“I’m angry at who did this to my child. They didn’t have to kill them. They didn’t have to take their lives. These were good girls. They were not on the streets. They had homes,” said Detroiter Chikita Madison, whose daughter Renisha Landers, 23, was found dead in her new Chrysler 300 on Dec. 19, alongside her cousin, Demesha Hunt, 24.

“I just hope that they can find whoever did this to them. That’s all I want. I want justice for my child,” said Madison, who cried as she pleaded for the public’s help. “If anybody knows anything, please come forward. I want to know what happened to my daughter. That was my best friend.”

Denise Reid, Hunt’s mother, is equally devastated, saying “I just try to be strong because I have a grandbaby to take care of,” said Reid, a teacher at a Detroit day care. “I haven’t gotten to the anger stage yet. I’m more in the depression stage. I’m very confused about what happened to my daughter … I don’t believe anyone would want to hurt her. She was loved by so many people.”

Reid stated, the violence in Detroit has taken a toll on her family. In June, two cousins were found shot and dead in a vacant home.

The family, she said, has had enough.

“They’re killing our children. They’re killing our elderly. And they’re killing our babies,” Reid said. “And that’s the truth right there.”

According to Detroit Free Press Detroit police, are on the hunt for the killer of the women, who may be targeting women who advertise for sexual services on Backpage.com, which features an adult classified section that includes ads for escorts, body rubs and strippers.

In the latest development, police are now seeking warrants to search various IP addresses and cell phone numbers in connection with the four murders. Police would not say whose IP addresses or cell phone numbers they want to search.

DPD spokesperson Eren Stephens also said today that Backpage.com is cooperating with the authorities, and that the four killings have triggered a wide-scale investigation that includes the FBI, Michigan State Police, Wayne County Sheriff’s office and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives.

Most recently, two more women were found burned beyond recognition about 1 a.m. Sunday in the trunk of a 1997 Buick LeSabre . The cause of death has not yet been determined, police said, but they are treating the incidents as suspicious deaths and have homicide investigators working the cases.
