You can expect the campaign team of Mitt Romney to be doing a tremendous amount of back-pedaling over the next several weeks. It is being reported by the Huffington Post that Romney’s campaign slogan “Keep America American” was the driving theme of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s. The slogan was the rallying cry for groups seeking to intimidate and terrorize black, Jewish and gay people all throughout the United States.
The Romney team has not commented on the coincidence, but it has certainly gotten the attention of those who compare the current Republican party with the racists of the past. Many of the Republican debates have focused on condemning the poor, immigrants, and ethnic minorities.
The slogan was used first in the 1850s by a group called the “Know Nothing Party.” The organization was anti-immigrant, reacting directly to the growth in immigrant population during the Irish Potato Famine.
